Ivor the giant loved the stars. He loved them because they shone so brightly and he loved them because occasionally they shot across the sky, much to his great delight. Ivor’s favourite thing to do in the whole world was to lie on his back in the middle of a field and watch the stars.

Ivor called the stars ‘diamonds’. He watched them shine and wink and blink at him and he believed that the beautiful stars were in the sky just for him to enjoy.

Ivor the Giant was an enormous but friendly giant. He was so tall he could reach high into the sky and he could touch the stars. Even though he was very friendly, he had no friends. He had no friends because he was so much taller than other people; they couldn’t see his friendly smiling face because it was so much higher than their eyes could see.

Now because Ivor had no friends and because he was sad and had nothing to do he decided he would collect the stars. So one night he reached high, high, high up into the sky and picked the diamonds out of the sky and put them in his rucksack. In the morning his rucksack was full of the diamonds from the sky and it made him happier than he had ever been in his whole life.

What Ivor didn’t know is that there was a small boy called Luther who also loved the stars. Luther lived on a farm and he looked after the sheep and cows. At the end of the day when the daylight faded he loved to lie on his back in the middle of a field with his daddy and watch the stars twinkling in the sky. Luther looked at the shapes the stars made in the sky. His favourite stars were the ones that made a shape like the letter L for Luther and his Daddy said there were stars that made the shape of a D for Daddy.

One evening Luther was looking up at the stars and he became very sad. The stars had started to disappear. Luther could no longer see the L shape of stars - it was just a straight line. He was so upset he shouted: “Daddy, where have the twinkling stars gone? Where are the shapes? Why is the sky so dark?”

Eines Abends sah Luther nach den Sternen und er wurde sehr traurig. Die Sterne hatten begonnen zu verschwinden. Meanwhile, Ivor the friendly giant was in the next field plucking more and more stars out of the sky and putting them in his rucksack. He smiled and sang a lovely tune as he gathered all of the ‘diamonds’ from the sky. When Ivor the giant had collected all of the stars he lay on his back in the field and looked up at the sky. It was so dark he couldn’t see anything at all.

Mittlerweile war Ivor, der Riese, in dem nächsten Feld, wo er mehr und mehr Sterne aus dem Himmel pflückte und in seinen Rucksack packte. As he lay there in the field he could hear a noise in the darkness. It was Luther. Luther was shouting again and again: “Someone has stolen the stars, please can they come back, someone has stolen the stars, please can they come back, I want to see the stars again, they belong to everyone and now they have gone!”

Als er dort in dem Feld lag, konnte er ein Geräusch in der Dunkelheit hören. Es war Luther. Ivor realised what he had done. He had taken the stars away from the whole world just for himself. “OOOOooooooohhhhh,” he gasped again. He had been so happy with all of the stars in his rucksack, but now he was very sad again.

Ivor begriff, was er angerichtet hatte. Er hatte die Sterne der ganzen Welt weggenommen, nur für sich selbst. “OOOOooooooohhhhh”, stöhnte er noch einmal. Er war so glücklich gewesen mit all den Sternen in seinem Rucksack, aber jetzt war er wieder sehr traurig.

Suddenly, Ivor stood up and grabbed his rucksack. He put his hand into the bag, took some stars and threw them up into the sky. Again and again he took a handful of the beautiful twinkling stars and threw them into the sky. ‘Whoosh, Whoosh, Whooooooooosh’ they went up into the sky.

Plötzlich stand Ivor auf und nahm seinen Rucksack. Er steckte seine Hand in die Tasche, nahm einige Sterne heraus und warf sie hinauf in den Himmel. Some were bright, some were dim, some shot across the sky and some moved gently through the darkness. Some of them made shapes and letters and some of them were blinking ... and ALL of them lit up the sky like diamonds.

Luther watched as Ivor threw the diamonds all around the sky, it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.

And as the diamonds dashed and glistened across the sky Luther saw an L shape for Luther and he saw a D shape for Daddy ... and he saw an I shape for Ivor.

“Thank you for putting the stars back, you big-giant-star-man,” Luther shouted. “The stars are my favourite thing in the world.” Ivor was amazed to hear this. He had believed the stars were just for him, but now he knew that they are for everyone. And so from that day onwards the stars always stayed in the sky for everyone in the world to enjoy.

Now Luther and Ivor became great friends. Luther would come out of his farm and shout: “Are you ready to look at the diamonds you big-giant-star-man?” And Ivor would laugh and shout back: “Let’s see what the diamonds are doing tonight, little Luther!” And then they would sit and watch the stars together.

Nun wurden Luther und Ivor großartige Freunde. Now, you don’t need to be in a field to see the stars, you can just close your eyes and watch them twinkle and twinkle and twinkle. Some are bright, some are dim, some shoot across the sky and some move gently through the darkness. Some make shapes and letters and ALL of them light up the sky like diamonds.
